Watch now | Israel will weather this for the short term, perhaps even the medium term, but something deeper broke here last night. We knew it was coming, yet we did nothing.
Less hysteria. Please. Democracy is not dying. Not in the US. Not in Israel.
Yesterday Donald Trump won election to the presidency quite convincingly. He obtained a popular majority of 51% of the vote in addition to his victory in the Electoral College. It is not the end of democracy. It is democracy. Trump won a four year limited term. There is absolutely no chance that he will be the President on January 21, 2029. The American system worked and it will continue to work in the future.
Yesterday in Israel, the Prime Minister did something that most observers think was unwise. I have no reason to believe that the critics are wrong. But, as far as I can understand it he acted within the law. Men in authority do unwise things all the time, no law can prevent that. That does not change the system. Citizens who believe that the Prime Minister is acting unwisely have the right to speak out, loudly and forcefully (but not in breach of the peace).
They should speak out. During the Judicial reform crisis of 2023 they did and the PM changed course.
Again, acting within and according to the law is not the end of Democracy.
I fear that Nov. 5 may mark the beginning of the end of 2 democracies...
I have a list of 'books to read.' I think it's appropriate to move "Next Stop" to the top of the list after I finish the one I'm reading now.
