Yesterday I stumbled upon Tommy Lapid's column in Maariv in 1987 discussing a proposed constitution for Israel. The title of the piece is "in favor of inequality" and he makes a similar point about Israel being a Jewish state. He (a very secular Israeli as I remember him) even advocates not separating church and state in Israel.
“Some” Israelis are racist but “many” Americans are racist? What is the dividing line between those two quantities? If it is meant to describe everyday white Americans, then “many” is an unfair commentary. If meant to describe so-called Progressive Americans, then “many” is an understatement.
Sorry, Mr. Gordis, but you are being somewhat disingenuous here! After bewailing the lack of "Jewish" character to Lapid's ad, you go right on to mention the "West Bank", instead of its historical and correct name of Judea and Samaria!

So so true and so sad! Thank you Daniel Gordis!
