Great analysis, very insightful! A shame it ends with the question "So what is the plan?" without an answer...

How is it , Mr. Gordis, that the "liberal values at the heart of the country have to give way one day" because of the "right", the "Mizrahim", and the "Haredim" ?!

My wife (Moroccan born from a religious home) and I (American born from a secular home) live in a town in the north of Israel (called here the "periphery"). So what are these "liberal values" that my wife and I (apparently) are not accepting and therefore threatening the country with impending doom?!

I am amazed that you could insult and denigrate more than half of the country, and then talk about

"liberal values". Excuse me, Mr. Gordis, but my wife and I need no lessons in democracy and "liberal values" from those who find those who do not share their political passions as somehow backwards and worthy of contempt (do I get some special "dispensation" here, unavailable to my "Mizrahi" wife, because I'm American-born Ashkenazi?!)

The only thing that Israel needs to be "saved" from is from those arrogant people who feel that Israel needs to be "saved"!

This is probably the best interview I have heard on the situation in Israel to date. I like the way Yoav frames the problem, which is that all of us are contributing to the collapse of society. The question is can the various groups renew with a well reasoned vision.

Todah rebah ve'behatzlacha!
