For July 4th: Professor Michael Oren, former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, shares his thoughts on his generation of immigrants and why he's still optimistic about American aliyah to Israel.
Fascinating episode. Well done. But, I am struck by a dualism-if there is a tension among Israeli's of not wanting or needing further immigration, if Israel is this miracle, then why all the (American) philanthropy flowing into the country?
As usual, it was wonderful and educational to listen to Ambassador Oren's observations. I was particularly struck by tho things (amongst many others).
Many years ago, I had a friend in Israel, whose in laws were from the Us. As a Ham Radio operator, I was able to connect them by a forerunner of internet technology on a regular basis (early 1980's) without the asimonim (which I happen to still have if anyone is interested).
The aspect of safety in our communities is not well appreciated by most American Jews. They see the occasional nationalistic attacks in Israel and are concerned, but they ignore the continuing stream of attacks here. It is my opinion that this aspect will encourage aliyah. I know that it has made me think again.
